Calamus dorsus, Wool and Porcupine Quill Sculpture
Calamus dorsus, Wool and Porcupine Quill Sculpture
Calamus dorsus, wool and porcupine quills on wood panel, 6 x 5.5 x 2.5 inches, 2014
This one-of-a-kind wall-hung sculpture combines wool with porcupine quills that seem to emerge from a center ridge. I've been experimenting with combinations of these two organic materials for several years. I am fascinated by the contrast between soft, welcoming wool and the looming threat of sharp quills. This abstract piece also looks like part of a mysterious larger whole; I like it that the viewer's imagination fills in the gaps.
