In The Glow: Möbiul

$4,000.00

In The Glow: Möbiul, wool and mixed media, 14 x14 x14 inches, 2024

The name of this piece derives from the idea of a möbius strip, a surface that can be formed by attaching the ends of a strip of paper together with a half-twist; following the surface takes you fully around the object. I wanted to explore the idea of the 'mental load'- the behind-the-scenes cognitive and emotional work that goes into managing a household and family, and often falls to women regardless of their other roles in life. To me it's about endlessly keeping one part of the mind attuned to caring for others; the pigmented folds of felt reflect off the surfaces of the opposite twisted section, illustrating the seen-yet-unseen effect of being the holder of a family's core.

I created this sculpture by compressing, tangling, and shaping loose fibers into felt using hand-held felting needles. I applied pigment and a UV sealer to minimize fading over time in sunlight. This piece is robust, yet it is best displayed under a glass dome or in a case to prevent dust (not included).

This piece was featured in my solo exhibit ‘In The Glow’ at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California from September - December 2024.
