In The Glow: Cicatrix

$5,000.00

Cicatrix, industrial felt and mixed media, 40 x 30 x 3 inches, 2024

A cicatrix is a scar - evidence of a healed wound. The body bears marks from living a life, both visible and hidden. For this piece I gathered a flat sheet of felt into a raised ridge by stitching folds together, then emphasized the flared-out folds that ringed the ridge, a result of deforming the sheet. Further, I applied pigment to the edges of the 'scar' that would give a subtle reflection against the surrounding hills. I have learned that, when manipulating thick industrial felt sheets, force or distortion applied in one area affects all the connected parts. As a metaphor for the body and for skin in particular, industrial felt communicates softness and durability in one.

This piece was featured in my solo exhibit ‘In The Glow’ at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California from September - December 2024.
